The history of PFL began in 2012 in Las Vegas (Nevada, USA). At that time, the World Series of Fighting (WSOF) organization was created. The promotion held mixed martial arts tournaments for five years and laid the foundation for the future league. In 2017, a group of investors led by venture capitalist Donn Davis acquired a controlling stake in WSOF. The organization was renamed Professional Fighters League (PFL). This year divided the promotion's history into "before" and "after."
PFL became the world's first MMA organization in a league format. Unlike traditional promotions like UFC and Bellator, where fights are held on the "who's available" principle, PFL introduced a season system. The regular season includes two fights per fighter with point accumulation. Then comes the playoffs - an elimination bracket. The final is a fight for the title and one million dollars.
The point system works as follows: a win in the first round gives 6 points, in the second round - 5 points, in the third round - 4 points. A win by judges' decision gives 3 points, a draw - 1 point, a loss - 0 points.
2025 became a turning point for the league. PFL announced a complete change in the tournament format. A team system was introduced: 10 teams of 8 fighters each. Two rounds of the regular season in a Round Robin system. Playoffs - a classic elimination bracket. Prize fund - 1 million dollars for the season winner in each category.
In 2026, 24 events are planned: 16 global shows and 8 regional ones. Tournaments will take place in Dubai, Madrid, Pretoria (South Africa), and the USA. Eight weight classes - from flyweight to heavyweight.
