UFC was founded on November 16, 1993 by entrepreneur Art Davie and martial arts master Rorion Gracie. The idea arose after watching a video about Japanese mixed martial arts tournaments. The first tournament took place in Denver (Colorado) and featured 8 fighters of different styles. The winner of UFC 1 was Royce Gracie - a representative of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He won three fights in one evening, proving the effectiveness of ground technique.

Evolution of the rules

The first UFC tournaments were held with virtually no rules - there were no weight classes, time limits, or prohibited techniques. This caused criticism and led to a temporary ban on broadcasts in some US states. In 2000, the "Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts" were introduced. Weight classes appeared, time limits (5 rounds of 5 minutes for title fights), prohibited techniques (strikes to the back of the head, eye pokes, groin strikes).

Zuffa Era (2001–2016)

In 2001, UFC was acquired by Zuffa LLC for 2 million dollars. At the helm were the Fertitta brothers and Dana White. This period became the golden era of the organization. The reality show "The Ultimate Fighter" (2005) was launched, which attracted a new audience. Contracts with TV channels brought stable funding. The organization began holding tournaments around the world.

Endeavor Era (2016–present)

In 2016, UFC was sold to the Endeavor consortium (formerly WME-IMG) for 4.04 billion dollars. This deal made UFC the most expensive sports organization in history. The organization continued its expansion - tournaments in Abu Dhabi, Paris, Sydney, Tokyo. In 2019, its own streaming platform UFC Fight Pass was launched.
