Modern MMA traces its history back to 1993, when the first UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) tournament was held in the USA. The idea belonged to entrepreneur Art Davie and martial arts master Rorion Gracie. The goal was to determine the most effective fighting style in no-holds-barred matches.
The first tournaments were held with virtually no rules - there were no weight classes, time limits, or forbidden techniques. This caused criticism and led to reforms. In 2000, the "Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts" were introduced, which are still in use today.
In 2001, UFC was acquired by Zuffa LLC for 2 million dollars. At the helm were the Fertitta brothers and Dana White. This period became the golden era of the organization. The reality show "The Ultimate Fighter" (2005) was launched, which attracted a new audience.
In 2016, UFC was sold to the Endeavor consortium for 4.04 billion dollars. Today, UFC holds more than 40 events a year worldwide. Broadcasts are available in 175 countries in 30 languages.
Parallel to UFC, other organizations developed: Bellator, ONE Championship, ACA, RCC, PFL. MMA has become one of the fastest-growing sports in the world.
In 2016, MMA was officially recognized as a sport in Russia. Today, several major promotions operate in the country, and championships and tournaments at all levels are held.
